How to Remember Everything That You Study: Follow These Simple Steps
So, if you want to remember anything that you study, keep the process simple. You don’t need to read the same chapter again and again and hope that your brain will somehow remember everything. Instead, you need to interact with what you are studying and give your brain a chance to understand, explain, and retrieve the information.
Step 1: Read a Small Amount
After any paragraph you read, or after 2 to 5 minutes of a video you watch, stop for a moment and ask yourself what you just learned. Don’t immediately move to the next paragraph and try to finish everything in one go or continue watching the video. Give yourself a little time to think about the information you just received.
Step 2: Explain It in Your Own Words
Now try to explain what you just learned in your own words, without looking. Don’t worry about using the exact words. The goal is to see whether you can actually explain the idea from your own understanding.
If you find it difficult to explain, go back and read that part again. Then close the book and try to explain it again. This will help you find the parts that you thought you understood, but actually it was just feelings.
Step 3: Write Down Your Understanding
Once you can explain the idea, write down your own understanding of it. Don’t simply copy everything from the book. Write what you understood in your own words.
Writing will help you look back at your thoughts and give you time to slow down and think about what you actually understood. Later you can come back and look back into your note, your thoughts, your words, and your understanding.
Step 4: Revise It Later
And don’t stop there. You also have to revise.
Come back to the topic the next day and try to remember what you learned without looking at your notes. After a few more days, come back to it again and try to explain it. You don’t have to read the entire chapter from the beginning every time. First, try to recall what you already know, and then check your notes to see what you missed.
The more you practice retrieving what you learned over time, the easier it becomes to bring that information back when you actually need it.
So, the next time you finish a chapter and feel like, “I understood everything,” don’t trust that feeling. Close the book, look away, and ask yourself:
Can I explain what I just studied without looking?
If you can, great. If you can’t, don’t worry. Now you know exactly what you need to work on. Go back, read that part again, explain it in your own words, and try again.
And that is the real difference between reading and remembering.

You Studied It, So Why Can’t You Remember It?
This time, you actually want to study. Not because your parents are forcing you, not because your exam is tomorrow, but because you want to improve yourself. You sit down, open your book, and start studying. You read the chapter carefully and, after some time, you finally finish it. You feel good. You feel like you understood everything.
Then your cousin walks into the room and asks, “What are you studying?”
You confidently open your mouth to explain it, but suddenly, no words come out.
Now you are confused. You are thinking, “Why? I just read this. I understood it. So why can’t I explain it?”
This happens to all of us. You can spend an hour studying a topic, feel completely satisfied after finishing it, and then struggle to remember even the basic points when someone asks you about it later.
And when this keeps happening again and again, many students slowly lose interest in learning. They stop reading books, stop watching educational videos, and stop trying to learn things outside their syllabus because, no matter how much time and effort they put into studying, they still end up forgetting what they learned.
So they start thinking, “If I am going to forget it anyway, why should I put in this much effort?”
The real problem is not that your brain cannot remember things. The real problem is that most of us were never taught how our brain learns and remembers new information.
How Our Brain Learns Information
If I tell you to study a topic and remember it, what will you probably do?
You will start by reading the topic. You might read the chapter once or twice. Maybe you will underline some important sentences. Maybe you will watch a video about it. While doing all of this, you will probably feel like you understand the topic.
But the moment I close your book and ask you a question about what you just studied, there is a good chance your mind will suddenly go blank.
Why does this happen?
Because our brain does not work like a camera or a video recorder; it does not simply record everything that happens and then play the recording back whenever we want. Memory is much more complicated than that. When we learn something, our brain has to process the information, understand it, connect it with what we already know, and build a memory that we can later retrieve.
Think about your own life. You don’t remember every single thing that happened yesterday. You don’t remember every word someone said to you, every road you walked on, or every object you saw during the day. Instead, you remember certain things, ideas, events, and experiences that your brain considered useful, meaningful, familiar, or connected to something else you already knew.
This is why your previous understanding matters so much when you are learning something new. The more things you already understand, the more places your brain has to connect new information to.
For example, imagine you are learning about gravity for the first time. You already know that if you drop a ball, it falls down. You have seen objects fall thousands of times in your life. So when someone explains that Earth pulls objects toward its centre because of gravity, you already have an experience that you can connect this new information to.
But imagine learning a completely new concept with no connection to anything you have experienced or understood before. It becomes much harder to build a strong understanding because your brain has fewer existing ideas to connect it with.
This is one reason why learning becomes easier as your understanding grows. New information does not always have to stand alone. It can become connected to things you already know.
Your Brain Tries to Make Sense of What You Learn
Our brain is very good at finding patterns and making sense of information. When you read a story, for example, you don’t normally remember every single sentence word for word. You remember what happened. You remember the people involved. You remember the important events and how they were connected.
This is exactly what happens when you try to study.
When you read a chapter, your brain is trying to understand what those words mean. It is trying to connect one idea to another and build some kind of understanding from all the information you are seeing.
And this is actually a good thing.
Once you understand how your brain works, you can use this process to your advantage.
The problem begins when you confuse familiarity with understanding.
You read a paragraph once and think, “I understand this.”
But do you really?
That feeling of understanding is partly coming from the fact that the words are right in front of you. You can see the explanation. You can follow the sentences. The ideas start to feel familiar because you have just seen them.
But if I take the book away and ask you to explain the same idea, you may suddenly realize that your understanding is not as strong as you thought.
The information is familiar, but you haven’t practiced bringing it back from your own memory.
This is why reading something once and thinking, “Yes, I got it,” can be misleading.
You may have understood the explanation while looking at it, but you may not yet be able to explain the idea on your own.
That difference is extremely important.
Reading Is Not Learning
Reading is not learning. It is a part of learning, but simply reading does not mean that you have learned it.
When you read or watch something for the first time, you are exposing your brain to the content. You are giving your brain new information. Your brain is trying to understand it, connect it with what you already know, and build a mental picture of it.
But that is only the beginning.
To actually learn the information and remember it for longer, you have to interact with the same content again and again in different ways.
And there is another problem here.
You might think, “Fine. I’ll just read the chapter more times.”
Unfortunately, reading something again and again is not always the answer.
When you read something for the second or third time, the information becomes more familiar. Because it is familiar, the task can start feeling easier. You already know what sentence is coming next. You recognize the words. You remember some of the explanation from the previous reading.
So you can start moving through the chapter almost automatically.
You are reading the words, but you may not be actively thinking about what they mean.
This is why simply rereading the same chapter again and again can give you the feeling that you know it without actually preparing you to recall it later.
Instead, after reading a short paragraph or a small section, you should stop and try to explain what you just understood in your own words.
Don’t look at the book.
Don’t try to repeat the exact sentence from the textbook.
Just explain it the way you would explain it to someone else.
For example, suppose you are reading about “photosynthesis“. You finish a small section and close the book. Now try to explain what you just learned.
You might say, “Plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their food, and oxygen is released during the process.”
Maybe your explanation isn’t exactly the same as the textbook. That’s completely fine. The important thing is that you are trying to bring the idea out of your own memory.
And if you can’t explain it, that’s useful too.
It means you have found the part that you need to study again.
So you read it one more time and try again.
This is much better than simply reading the same paragraph five times.
Explain What You Understand in Your Own Words
This is one of the simplest things you can add to your study routine.
After a short paragraph, section, or around two to five minutes of a video, stop.
Ask yourself:
“What did I just learn?”
Then explain it in your own words.
You don’t need to make your explanation perfect. In fact, you might struggle at first. You might know what the idea means but find it difficult to put it into words.
That struggle is exactly what you need.
When the book is open in front of you, the explanation is being provided for you. You can look at the words and understand them. But when you close the book and try to explain the idea yourself, your brain has to search for the information and reconstruct what you understood.
Now you are not simply moving forward through the chapter. You are stopping and looking back at what you just learned.
You are asking yourself, “What was the actual idea here?”
You are finding the words to explain it.
And if you cannot find the words, you know you need to go back and look at the material again.
This is why explaining in your own words is so useful. It forces you to find out whether you actually understand something or whether it only feels familiar because you just read it.
Write Down Your Own Understanding
After explaining the idea in your own words, write it down.
Again, don’t copy the exact textbook words.
Write your own understanding, your own words.
You might write two or three sentences. You might make a small diagram. You might write a few bullet points. It doesn’t have to look beautiful, and you don’t need to spend twenty minutes making perfect notes.
The purpose of writing is to slow yourself down and look at your own thoughts.
When you are only thinking about something in your head, your understanding can feel clearer than it actually is. But when you try to put that understanding into words, you have to decide exactly what you mean.
For example, you may think you understand a concept completely. Then you start writing about it and suddenly realize, “Wait, I don’t actually know why this happens.”
That’s a good discovery.
Now you know what you need to learn.
Writing gives you a chance to look back at your own thoughts and organize them. It also gives you notes; you can come back and look at your thoughts, your words, and your understanding.
So instead of copying this from your textbook:
“Photosynthesis is a process by which green plants convert light energy into chemical energy.”
You might write:
“Photosynthesis is how plants use sunlight to make food.”
Your version may be simpler, but if that is how you understand the idea, it is much more useful than blindly copying the textbook.
Once you understand the simple version, you can always add more detail later.
Learning It Once Isn’t Enough
You have now read the information. You stopped, explained it in your own words, wrote down what you understood, and checked the parts you couldn’t explain and studied them again. But there is still one more thing you need to do: you have to revise.
Because even after doing all of this, you can still forget. And forgetting is normal.
Your brain is naturally energy efficient. It always tries to save energy, so it tries to delete the information that is not being used. Your brain does not store every piece of information you come across equally. It tries to keep the information that you use again and again and slowly lets go of the information that you don’t use.
You can think of memory in two parts: short-term memory and long-term memory. When you first learn something, most of your understanding comes from your short-term memory. You have just read the information, so it is fresh in your mind, and you can easily think about it. But if you don’t use or revise that information, your brain, being energy efficient, starts letting go of it.
Long-term memory is where information can stay for a much longer time.
But information does not simply move from short-term memory to long-term memory just because you say to your brain you want it.
Repeated interaction, or call it revision, is what is going to move short-term memory to long-term memory. When you revise something, explain it in your own words, write it down, use it, or try to retrieve it again and again, you are giving your brain a reason to keep that information in long-term memory.
So don’t be sad when you forget something. Just revise it more.
Forgetting does not mean that you are bad at learning. It means your brain is doing what it naturally does: trying to be energy efficient and letting go of information that is not being used.
And don’t wait too long to come back to revise. The longer you leave any information without revising or retrieving it, the more difficult it can become to remember. So, come back to the information before your brain starts deleting it because it is not being used.
For example, if you study a chapter today, you can come back to it tomorrow and try to remember the main ideas. Then you can revisit it again after a few days. Later, you can test yourself again. You don’t have to spend the same amount of time every time. The first time you learn something, you may spend thirty minutes on it. The next day, you might only need five or ten minutes to recall the main ideas. A few days later, you might only need to answer a few questions.
The point is not to keep reading the chapter from the beginning every time. The point is to bring the information back into your mind.
The Best Way to Revise: Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition means revisiting what you learned after increasing gaps of time instead of trying to learn everything in one sitting.

This idea is supported by a large amount of research on learning. Studies on the spacing effect have found that spreading study opportunities over time generally improves long-term retention compared with putting those study opportunities close together in one session. A large review by Cepeda and colleagues looked at 317 experiments and found that the timing between study sessions affects later retention.
Retrieval practice is also important here. Instead of simply reading your notes again, you try to bring the information back from your memory. A major review of learning techniques found that practice testing and distributed practice were among the techniques with the strongest evidence for improving learning across different situations. Simply rereading material was less effective than these techniques for promoting learning.
Practice testing is testing yourself on what you are trying to learn. Distributed practice is spreading your study time out over several days or weeks instead of cramming it all in at once.
So your revision should not just be, “Let me read my notes again.”
Instead, first close your notes and ask yourself:
“What do I remember?”
Try to explain the topic in your own words. Try to remember the main ideas, the important details, and how they are connected. Only after you have tried to remember should you open your notes and see what you missed.
Now your revision becomes another learning session rather than another reading session.
And this is why you don’t have to be afraid of forgetting. Forgetting can tell you what you need to revise. If you can’t remember something, you have found a part of the topic that needs more practice. Go back to it, understand it again, and try to revise it later.
You are not trying to remember everything after studying it once. You are giving your brain multiple opportunities to understand the information, use it, and bring it back to your mind over time.
Why Does This Work?
Let’s go back to what happens when you only read.
When you read, your brain is getting familiar with the content. The words you see start looking familiar to you. When you see the same words again and again, they start looking even more familiar. This familiarity can give you a sense of understanding. You feel like, “Yes, I understand this.” But your actual understanding has not necessarily become better. The words are simply becoming familiar because you have seen them before.
Now think about what happens when you read a chapter from beginning to end without stopping. As you read, your brain starts visualizing the story. You keep going from one paragraph to another, and your brain keeps building and visualizing this story. You are engaged with the story, so it feels like you are learning and remembering everything. But you may actually just be imagining this story in your brain from beginning to end.
That is why, when you non-stop read an entire chapter, you can feel like you know everything but still struggle when someone asks you to explain it. You were just going through that story in your brain. You were seeing the words, understanding them while they were in front of you, and moving from the beginning to the end, but you were not stopping to check whether you could actually remember and explain what you had just learned.
So, it is important that you stop and explain things in your own words. Because when you do that, you are no longer just imagining the story. You are actually giving words to describe your story, your thoughts, and your understanding. You are taking what was only a feeling of understanding in your head and trying to put that understanding into words.
And when you write that down, you take it one step further. Now your understanding is not only in your head. You have your own words written down. Tomorrow, you can come back and look at your own words, look at your own understanding, and revise it. You don’t have to start reading the entire chapter again. You can look at what you understood, try to remember it, and see what you missed.
You cannot expect yourself to remember everything just by reading something once. You have to interact with the information, explain it in your own words, write down your understanding, and then come back to it again and revise it.
And this is the complete system you have to follow in order to remember everything that you study.
